Unschooling

I homeschooled Luke for almost 4 years, until september 2013 when he started high school. It was certainly an adventure.

Here i'll share some ideas that helped me.

Homeschool Ideas

Homeschooling your child is a very rewarding experience for both of you.  It is lovely to share so many exciting times together.

These are some ideas which have helped me over the last few years.

* Follow their interests.  Everyone learns better if they are learning about something they are interested in, so follow what they would like to learn.. We have done projects on a wide range of subjects including Ancient Rome and Greece, mythology, China, the Battle of Waterloo, the human body and Planet Earth.

* Have a routine, but don't be too strict with it.  Some days we do everything I had planned, and other days we do other things such as a trip out for the day.  These are all valuable learning experiences.

* Make learning fun.  If your child doesn't enjoy maths, for example, use games such as monopoly to learn about money, play shops, bake and cook together, use toys such as lego to learn about fractions and use online maths games.  Learning doesn't have to be about sitting at a desk.

* Use the internet.  There are some really helpful websites with information for home educators and websites to aid learning.  We use it for both.

* Encourage them, but don't push them too hard.  The advantage of homeschooling is that your child isn't constantly being compared to other children.  They can work at a pace which is right for them without any worries or stress.  This makes learning more fun.

* Keep a homeschool journal of the things you've done and the things you'd like to do in the future.  I keep a daily journal of what we do each day, and a separate one with plans for future projects etc.

* File your child's work.  I keep all the work filed in a lever arch file, which is divided into sections.

* Get outdoors -everyday if possible, even if it's simply into the garden.  Children learn so much from being outdoors, and the fresh air and exercise don't hurt either.
