Family Time & Travelling On Raw

The last few weeks have been very busy, mostly doing activities with the boys.  Although I did manage to pass the biology module of my juice therapy course with 87% a few days ago so that was a good moment.  I'm now starting the anatomy module, so very excited about that as I love that subject.

So a few weeks ago, Luke and I attended a home ed event at a local library.  It was all about food and how people used to eat in medieval times.

First we had a look around the museum which was very interesting and Luke enjoyed trying out a few of the activities.

Then we did a workshop in making medieval gingerbread men.  Luke loved getting his hands messy and creating different shapes with the mixture.

This is the finished result.  It was supposed to be a rabbit, but Luke decided that it looked more like the Joker from Batman.  Either way, he enjoyed eating it on the bus on the way home, and it was a really fun afternoon for both of us.

A few days later Dylan turned 14. We had lots of friends and family over to celebrate and he really enjoyed his day.  My friend made him an amazing F1 birthday cake too.

I know all mums say it, but the time really has gone so fast and I can't quite believe that he's 14 already.  It's made me even more determined to enjoy my time with the boys and create lots of lovely memories for them.

They really do grow up fast.

So along the theme of creating memories, Dylan and I left for Holland for 4 days last Thursday so that he could compete in a taekwondo tournament in Rotterdam.

We set off for the overnight ferry on Thursday afternoon, and arrived in Rotterdam at about 8:30 on Friday morning.

We managed to find our apartment which was right in the centre of Rotterdam.  The views were lovely, especially at night.

On Saturday Dylan competed in his competition.  He did really well and came away with bronze.  I was so proud of him, he tried so hard.  It was lovely to see him doing what he loves most.

We set off back home on Sunday evening, and spent another night on the ferry.  It was very relaxed and we woke in the morning to the views of the sun rising over the North Sea.

One thing which I did take with me is my juicer.  I didn't want going abroad to mean that I couldn't still enjoy a healthy diet, and juices.

I bought some fruits and vegetables and made juices on a morning in the apartment.  I also took bottles with me to put the juices in so we could drink them throughout the day.

I took some food with me, including dried fruits, nuts & seeds, raw chocolate and some fresh fruit in a cooler bag and managed to eat almost completely raw whilst I was there, eating lots of salads for dinners along with some non raw foods such as wild rice and a baked potato.

This was a very good learning experience for me as we are taking the boys travelling around Europe this August and eating healthily whilst we do that is very important to me.  We are very excited about this trip, it's going to be an amazing experience.  I can't believe it's only eight weeks away.

And yes, my juicer is definitely coming with me again!

  2. Hi Kelly,
May I ask what sort of juicer you have? I would love to take my blender away with me but it's just too big and heavy (and I don't drive). I've been contemplating buying a tribest personal blender so that I can make soups, smoothies and salad dressings when I'm away.

  3. Thanks Rose, I can't wait. It should be an amazing experience. xx

Hi Jane, i've got 2 juicers, a Matstone masticating juicer and Philips centifugal one. I took the Philips one away with me, and that's probably the one i'll take around Europe. I did think about buying a travel juicer, but as we were going in the car it was just as easy to take the big one. I'm looking into a travel blender though as well, as I did miss having smoothies. The Tribest looks really good. I'll let you know what I decide and i'm hoping to post more about juicing and eating raw whilst travelling so hopefully that will be helpful. xx

  4. Hi Kelly,
Ahhhh, you took the car – no wonder you were able to take a juicer (I was imagining you squeezing it into a suitcase on wheels:-)). I also have a masticating juicer and my beloved vitamix, which I use umpteen times a day. I miss them terribly when I go away, but I don’t drive! Never the less, it forces me to eat and drink well without them, which is a good exercise. I tend to eat more whole fruits. Sometimes I take a small electric hand blender along, which makes reasonable soft-fruit smoothies and dressings I’ll look forward to reading your raw travelling tales.

    Thank you for your reply,
    jane
